2 minutes to read

If you ever wondered what would it be like to have a time machine and go back in time, I have great news for you. Šibenik, the city of fortresses, is living its amazing past. One of those fortresses is under the protection of UNESCO since December 2017.

St. Michael’s (St. Mihovil’s) fortress

St. Michael's fortress is the oldest one. It is mentioned for the first time in 1066 during the rule of king Peter Krešimir IV. Šibenik is also for the first time mentioned during this period, and it is also known as Krešimir’s city. St. Michael's fortress was made to defend the entrance into the bay, and it is considered that the whole city started to develop towards the sea from this point in time. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, after being destructed for many times. It was finally renovated in 2014, and today it is a stage for many musical and other cultural events.

St. John’s (St. Ivan’s) fortress

St. John's fortress is located above the old city. It was built in 1646 in order to defend the city from Turkish attacks. It has a shape of a star, and it was built in only 45 days. Saved documents witness that all citizens were included in the construction process, as it was important to finish it as quickly as possible. It is interesting to mention that Šibenik was never conquered by the Ottoman Empire. In 2014, it served as a venue for shooting scenes from the Game of Thrones series. During the visit, you will hear several legends about St. Ivan and this place.
