IT get-together: join the BarCamp in Armenia

3 minutes to read

BarCamp is an international network of conferences that are organized to discuss and present IT trends, achievements and news. Sometimes this format is used in other sectors as well, but in Armenia, it's all about information technologies, new apps, computer programmes, websites and other IT solutions. It brings together many participants that come with their innovative ideas to conduct workshops and seminars, or to deliver speeches. Tim O'Reilly, the founder of O'Reilly media, was behind so-called FooBar where the entrance was with invitations, and as an alternative to this, later was organized BarCamp without invitation, so that everyone who wants can join. Today I'll tell you about IT get-together-BarCamp in Armenia.

More about BarCamp

The first BarCamp was held in the city of Palo Alto in 2005, after which it became popular and was organized in hundreds of cities across the globe including Armenian cities of Vanadzor, Gyumri, Armavir and the capital Yerevan. In Yerevan, it takes place each year since 2008. IT is a very developed field in Armenia (there are many internationally known apps written by Armenian programmers) that’s why this event is top-rated and the most wanted one among the locals. It brings together bloggers, media professionals, IT specialists, companies involved in Internet and digital technologies, etc. Also, there are random people who have no clue about IT but are eager to learn something new (for example me). It's a great place for networking and for making new friends, especially taking into account that the event days are followed by awesome after-parties and all the participants hang out together and have a lot of fun. There is no special body or institution to initiate a BarCamp, and it can be done by anyone who is interested in doing that. Of course, you can just stand and follow it, but you can also deliver a speech (if you find you have something to share with the participants) or somehow contribute to the event by helping with the preparation or implementation.

How to participate?

In order to participate in the BarCamp, you have to register in advance. Yerevan BarCamp, that lasts two days, is attended by thousands of participants each year. Registration is also needed, if you want to deliver a speech. However, if you do not manage to do that before, you can still insert your name at the available space on the whiteboard "Timetables" on the event day. Each speech has to last not more than 15-20 minutes. The languages of presentations are Armenian, Russian and English. You are not obliged to follow all the presentations. At the beginning of each BarCamp, it's always announced that, if you are not interested in all presentations, you can just follow those that you want.

At the BarCamp, there is also a job fair for IT specialists. It's the coolest IT get-together that brings together many bright people and it gives you an opportunity to learn new things, to broaden your knowledge and to know more about IT in general. If you are in Armenia from 16-17 June,2018 , do not forget to join the "conference" (if yore visiting Armenia next year check Barcamp Yerevan's FB page for the dates).
