A Day Trip To Spoleto From Rome

1 minutes to read

Spoleto is not the most well-known city in Umbria, but it is certainly a must-see for its breathtaking beauty. Now that it is also home to the world best gelato flavor, Spoleto is becoming a potential hotspot, yet retaining its hidden-gem spirit.

Spoleto can be reached easily from Rome by train. The direct train from the main train station Roma Termini to Spoleto takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. A return ticket costs roughly 18 euros.

In the morning, you will have plenty of time to explore the city center and Spoleto's main attractions. Some of the highlights are Ponte delle Torri, Duomo di Spoleto, Teatro Romano and Casa Romana.

When it comes to lunchtime, make sure to try strangozzi alla spoletina, the specialty pasta dish of Spoleto. The city is also famous for serving quality truffle dishes.

The highlight of the day must be the much-anticipated tasting of the world best gelato flavor. After a three-year contest, Gelateria Crispini from Spoleto won the best place. Their pistachio flavor was awarded the best gelato in the world by the Gelato World Tour. Some of its ingredients are roasted vanilla beans and Sicilian pistachios. I was lucky enough to taste the gelato, and it was Incredibly smooth and full of delicate flavors.

Afterwards, if you have time, visit Basilica di San Salvatore, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unfortunately, due to recent earthquakes, the basilica is closing for a year. Still, the graveyard next to the basilica is ideal for those looking for overlooked beauty and off the beaten path places.
