Walking in the greenery of Zelenci

2 minutes to read

Slovenia is a country known for being surrounded by mountains, lakes and green landscape. The country’s highest mountain Triglav as well as hiking and walking, in general, take a big part of Slovenian culture and identity. That is why preserving and renewing nature often plays an important role in the life of Slovenian people. National parks and nature reserves give us the possibility to enjoy beautiful places and its greenery, while not doing any harm to the environment, landscape or animal species. Here, I would like to present to you one of Slovenia’s most beautiful nature reserves called Zelenci Nature Reserve or just Zelenci, where you can spend your vacation with a stunning view of the Julian Alps. The name of the nature reserve Zelenci means "green" in Slovenian and was inspired by a lake of emerald green colour located there.

Get in touch with nature

You will encounter a large number of various animal and plant species in the nature reserve, which live there peacefully and will only make your experience more charming and interesting. Many of them live in the surroundings of a famous green lake, which is the reason behind the name of the reserve.  The lake is only two meters deep and interestingly never freezes in the winter. You can take a walk to the lake on a wooden footbridge and explore its unique environment or just have a seat and enjoy the view.

Activities in Kranjska Gora

Another interesting destination, located very close to Zelenci Nature Reserve is the town of Kranjska Gora - a popular destination in the warmer, as well as in the colder part of the year. In the winter season, the location transforms into a ski resort with various ski slopes and a magnificent view of the white Slovenian and Austrian mountains. In the summer months, it is a very popular hiking and cycling destination. It also offers many other activities, like climbing, fishing and other sports activities. There are many marked paths, organized activities and interesting stories for you to explore there. Kranjska Gora is not officially a part of Zelenci Nature Reserve but is often connected to it, as it offers different kinds of activities, that are not available in the protected area of the nature reserve.
