Reasons to visit Georgia - history, wines, alphabet

2 minutes to read

I have already written many articles about Georgia, and I hope that you already have a broad idea about my country. However, in this article, I would like to draw your attention to the most important facts that make this country unique and very attractive for the visitors. There are many reasons to visit Georgia such as long history, good wines and unique alphabet.

One of the oldest countries in the world

To start with, Georgia is one of the oldest countries in the world. Its ancient kingdoms were Diauehi in the 12th century BC and Colchisi in the 8th century BC. The Christianity was preached in the 1st century and was widely spread from the 4th century by Saint Nino.

Did you know that my country is home of the first Europeans? During the archaeological excavations in Dmanisi, a 1,8 million-year-old skull was found, which is the most ancient one in the whole Europe. These findings have played a huge role in the understanding of human’s evolution. The archaeologists also found several working tools nearby. After they excavated more skulls, the foreign scientists called them “Homo Georgicus” and Georgians named them Mzia (female) and Zeva (male).

Wines

The next important thing about Georgia is that it is the home country of wine. We have a history of wine-making that starts from 7000-8000 years ago. The oldest grape seeds were found on the territory of Georgia with cultivated vine and petrified leaves. We have one of the oldest traditions and technologies of the wine production. In Georgia, you can find around 525 different types of grapes, especially in the Kakheti Region and many different sorts of wines.

In 2013, UNESCO decided to include the Georgian method of wine-making in Kvevri (clay pot) in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Monuments.

Georgian script

Last but not least, I would like to tell you about the Georgian script. My foreign guests always ask me if it has any similarities with other alphabets and I am always happy and proud to answer them that our script is unique, as its origins are not related to any other alphabet in the world. Georgia has its own language and alphabet. Georgian writing system is one of the 14 that are known in the world. Our language belongs to the Iberian-Caucasian language group. Around 4000 years ago, the Georgians spoke the old Georgian language that is very different from the modern one that we speak today. Our alphabet was created in the 3rd century BC during the time of the King Pharnavaz.

Besides history, wines and alphabet, there are many more reasons to visit Georgia. In the next article, I am going to tell you about the silk road, Golden Fleece and amazing nature in Georgia. However, just knowing the interesting facts is not enough. You have to explore Georgia by yourself to realize its uniqueness and beauty.
