In addition to Valletta, I would highly recommend visiting Mdina in Malta. Mdina was the former capital of the country from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is full of history and fascinating architecture.
"Mdina is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture." - Visit Malta website
Located in the Northern Region of Malta, Mdina is a fortified medieval city. Mdina's history dates back to more than four centuries ago. Walking within the ancient walled city, you will discover different types of architecture, from medieval to Baroque style. Apart from that, the adorable, colorful doors and windows are characteristic of the historic town.
Some famous sights to visit are the St. Paul's Cathedral and Palazzo Falson. Although you would have to buy a ticket to visit St. Paul's Cathedral and its museum, it is worth it. Another cool place to visit if you have time is the National Museum of Natural History. If you happen to visit Mdina on a full moon night, you will enjoy a magical view of the moon. The moon as seen from Malta is brighter and bigger than in most other places.
Before leaving, do not forget to try some pastizzi, traditional Maltese pastries or slices of chocolate cakes at the English style tea garden Fontanella. I only try the traditional pastries once in Fontanella so I could not compare its quality to other places. However, they were really delicious. Two fillings available were ricotta cheese and pea mash. Although the café has a great view of the island, the prices are affordable, and the staff is friendly.
Mdina is accessible by bus from both the Blue Grotta and Valletta. Close to Mdina is Rabat, also worth exploring because of its rich history and cultural heritage. A popular attraction in Rabat is St. Paul's Catacomb. Make sure you have plenty of time if you plan to travel by bus in Malta because the Maltese bus system is not always efficient.
