Valletta: An Elegant and Cultured Capital

Despite its small size, the capital of Malta has a lot to offer, especially cultural activities. Do you know that Valletta will be one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2018?

Together with Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, Valletta is an ideal destination for culture lovers in 2018. Even since late 2017, Valletta has organized many cultural festivals such as the Three Palaces Festival, which offers classical music concerts. Make sure to check for events in Valletta before visiting the city in 2018. Attending at least one cultural activity there will make your experience more memorable. The magnificent Teatru Manoel, which was opened in 1732, is currently closed due to restoration in preparation for 2018.

The small capital itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous sights include Saint John's Co-Cathedral, Teatru Manoel, the Palace of the Grand Master, and the National Museum of Archaeology. The marvelous High Baroque interior of St. John's Co-Cathedral is definitely a must see. Although you have to pay an entrance fee, the ticket includes an audio guide, so it is worth it. Apart from those, it is interesting to wander around the small streets of the city and explore its unique architecture. Tranquil places to admire nature and relax near the sea are the Barrakka Gardens. Apart from those specific sights, some local friends recommended us to wander around the city and explore its beautiful streets and impressive architecture.

One of the best views of Valletta is from the ferry stop in the nearby resort town called Sliema. The best time to take a ferry trip from Valletta to Sliema to enjoy the fantastic skyline of the capital is during sunset. The view is peaceful and mesmerizing. A one-way ticket only costs 1.50 euros, and the ferry frequently runs, every half an hour. Sliema itself is worth visiting for its energetic vibe and a variety of shopping options. We actually had lunch in Sliema after a morning exploring Valletta. I high recommend the Maltese restaurant called Ta' Kris. Maltese food is as hearty as British food and as flavorful as Sicilian food. Therefore, do not hesitate to try their traditional dishes such as the rabbit stew.
