Praça do Arsenal (Recife)

Description

The Pernambuco Navy Arsenal was the headquarters of the Brazilian Navy, and it was located next to the Port of the city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco. With the Proclamation of the Republic, the federal government decided to move the former military bases of the navy to Rio de Janeiro, at that time, the capital of the country. When the Arsenal was deactivated, its buildings were demolished, leaving only one, called the Malakoff Tower. The space was transformed into a square for public use. © Lais Castro / wikimedia
