Description

Pollentia was a Roman city, nowadays the most important archaeological site from the Roman period in Mallorca (Spain). It is located in the municipality of Alcudia, although its name was inherited in the Islamic period by the nearby town of Pollensa. According to classical authors, it was founded by the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus during the Roman conquest of the Balearic Islands between 123 and 121. However, archaeological excavations that have been carried out in the city have dated the foundation of the city to between 80 and 70 BC, during the Sertorius War. © iStock / pwmotion
