Description

The Great Saint Bernard Hospice was built around 1050 by Saint Bernard of Menthon (also called of Aosta or of Mont-Joux), an archbishop of Aosta who had the ambition to restore the safety of the Great Saint Bernard Pass, an important way through the Alps. It still operates as a hospice for today’s travellers. It is the place where the Saint Bernard dog breed was created at the beginning of the 18th century, to help guard the place.
