Castelo de Mértola

Description

This ancient fortification, in the small Alentejo town of Mértola, stands atop of the town's hill, next to parish church. The castle dates was built around the 13th century on Arab foundations, which were also built atop of a Roman forum. From the top tower you have a privileged view of the town of Mértola and the River Guadiana, and on the inside you have a museum that has itens excavated and preserved from the keeps many years of history, since it was one the most resistant and impenetrable castles in all of the Iberian Peninsula.
