A fascinating region of Khizi, is located in the northeast of Azerbaijan, and it is the closest mountainous area to the capital city Baku. The distance between Baku and Khizi is 70 km. These, so-called Candy Cane Mountains, are popular not only for its multi-coloured mountains but also because of its nice places such as the Altiagac National Park and the Cannet Baghi recreation complex.

The Altiagac National Park

The Altiagac National Park was established in 2004 in the administrative areas of Khizi and Siyazan districts. The total area of the park is 11,035 hectares. Most of the National Park's territory is covered by forests. The main tree species that form the wood are: the Caucasian oak tree, the Caucasian walnut and the eastern peanut. There are many animal species such as: roe deer, brown bear, wild boar, lynx, racoon, rabbit, fox, squirrel, wolf, birds, pheasants, alabahta, quail, shepherd, desert eagle. The biggest river in the area is the Atachay. This river course originates from the 1870-meter-height Dugar Mountains, and it poures into the Caspian Sea.

Besides everthing mentioned above, there are many historical monuments and places in the Khizi region: the Beshbarmak tower which was erected in the mid-18th century, the remains of the lost city from the 5th century, the Sheikh Heydar's tomb, the remains of the Hizan fortress from the 5th century, and the porch of the 15th century in the village of Chalanc. Khizi is also famous for its natural springs, beautiful carpets and rugs.
