A little bit of history

A history testifies that the territory of the present Guba region, located on the north-eastern slopes of Shahdag mountain and on the bank of the Gudilcai River, was inhabited since the ancient times. This is often mentioned in the Albanian and Arabic sources, as well as in the works of European geographers. The famous Norwegian travel scientist Heyerdahl came to Guba during his visit to Azerbaijan because he believed that the "Aces" mentioned in the German-Scandinavian epic "Edda" are the most ancient ancestors of Azerbaijanis, who came to the north of Europe during the great migration of peoples. In the "Edda", it is narrated that Aces led by Odin live in the heavenly village of Asgard. Many bvelieve that the "heavenly village" mentioned in Edda may be Khinalag, one the highest living areas in the Caucasus region.

The river Gudilcai

Guba is renowned not only for its rich history but also for its pristine nature. The most famous reservoir of the Guba is the river Gudialcai. The 108 km long Gudialcai, originates at the peak of Tufandag mountain of the Greater Caucasus Range, at the altitude of 3000 m above the sea level. It is considered to be the largest river flowing through the territory of Guba, with the total area of its channel of 799 km2. The river is also famous for a stone bridge, unique for our country. It was built on the river Gudialcai in 1910. Fourteen spans of this arch bridge, with a total length of 275 m and a width of 8 m, are made of baked bricks. A bridge of this type is the only one in Azerbaijan. The multi-span design allows it to remain intact even during heavy mudflows and floods.

Afurdja waterfall

The Afurdja waterfall is located in the southern part of the Guba region. It is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of nature. The waterfall, about 60 meters high, is recorded as a natural geological monument and is protected by the state. You can reach the waterfall in two ways: on foot or by car. The first method is rather complicated, considering that you will have to climb up a dirt road and steep slopes for three kilometres. The Afurdja waterfall begins in the mountains and as a small river flows into the gorge. The word "Afurdja" means "a place where water splashes fall".

Where to eat

The road to Gechresh (the village and municipality in the Guba region) is stunningly beautiful and picturesque, on both sides of the road. The trees are so high that their crowns intertwine, forming a natural tunnel. In the forest, there are numerous restaurants and tea houses.
