Kagoshima

Covering the island of Kyushu as well as the Ryukyu Archipelago, Kagoshima Prefecture consists of two peninsulas – Satsuma and Osumi. The capital city of Japan’s southernmost prefecture is Kagoshima....

The region of Kagoshima boasts natural wild settings - from beautiful subtropical beaches and ancient forests to majestic volcanoes and abundant hot springs. Sunny Kagoshima, also known as the Hawaii of Japan, is home to some dormant but also active volcanoes, namely Mt. Kirishima and Mt. Sakurajima. When in the city of Kagoshima, don’t miss the magnificent view of Mt. Sakurajima which towers out of the Kagoshima Bay. The area surrounding one of Japan’s most active volcanoes is rich with hot springs and onsen facilities. Another must-see destination for all adventure seekers is on the subtropical island of Yakushima. Here you can hike in the thick ancient forest, but also conquer some of the highest mountain peaks in Kyushu. If you are into pristine beaches and spectacular coral reefs, head to Kagoshima’s southern islands – Ōsumi, Tokara and Amami. Note that Kagoshima has been voted the friendliest city in Japan, so consider spending as much time as possible in this place.
