Punjab

Situated on the northwestern tip of India, Punjab belongs to the group of smaller Indian states. Due to complex history, its capital city Chandigarh is at the same time a union territory and the capital of the state of Haryana....

Geographically speaking, this state is a part of the larger Punjab region, whose western share is today a province in Pakistan. As its name suggests (“the land of five waters”), Punjab is home to five rivers - Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum and Chenab. The rich history of this region is reflected in its impressive forts and palaces, monuments and battlefields spread over the main settlements – Kapurthala, Patiala and Chandigarh. One of those architectural marvels is Golden Temple in Amritsar, the most visited place in Punjab and India, leaving Taj Mahal on the second place. Home to many religions, such as Sikhism, Buddhism and Sufism, Punjab has one of the world’s best spiritual sites – Harmandir Sahib. But for a truly traditional experience, the best is to visit some of the local villages to taste its renowned cuisine. And if you look for something emotional, don’t miss the border closing ceremony at Attari-Wagah, which takes place every evening.
