A legend about Bakhmaro

Bakhmaro Resort is located in the region of Guria, and it is the highest alpine climatic resort of our country. The resort reaches 2000 m of altitude and is surrounded by green forest. People say that the name ‘Bakhmaro’ has a Svanetian origin. According to one legend, there was one famous Georgian man from Svaneti who was relaxing in this territory with his family. He had one beautiful daughter Maro. Unfortunately, one day, the enemies of the family stole and killed her. When Maro’s father found her, he saw an inscription in the Svanetian language: “Bakh Maro” that is translated as “see, here is Maro.”

Healing features

Later on, the local shepherds discovered the healing features of this resort. One of the shepherds had respiratory problems, and he fully recovered after spending several days in Bakhmaro. After this fact, several doctors were interested in this place, as they realized that the air of the resort was the effective medicine for the people with respiratory problems. In 1893, the doctors did an experiment by sending several sick patients there. After a while, everyone recovered thanks to the fresh air of Bakhmaro Resort.

From 1900, they started to make roads and water pipes in Bakhmaro to make this place more reachable for the visitors. After this, the constructions of the summerhouses became popular here. The architecture of houses is interesting in Bakhmaro, as they are built on the pillars. The reason is the snowy weather as the snow reaches around seven meters in winter. Therefore, all houses are constructed from the wood and people believe that they can survive big snow. 

The best season to visit Bakhmaro is summertime, when you can enjoy the fresh air and nature at its maximum. The number of visitors increases each year, and their favorite activity is to watch the sunrise. There is one special hill named “the hill of sunrise.’’ Many visitors of Bakhmaro gather there in the evenings with the tents to wait for the sunrise. It is breathtaking sightseeing, a foggy sky full of clouds, lighted by the summer sun. It is hard to describe the beauty of Bakhmaro with words, better to see it with your own eyes.
