Walk among the dead – Vienna Halloween Treats

2 minutes to read

Halloween is the holiday that got a lot of attention in the past years in Vienna. Although most of the people connect Halloween with the crazy parties of the witches, undead, vampires, and other scary creatures, there is still more to it. What can you experience if you visit Vienna at the end of October? A day before Halloween, you can run at the Ghost Run, where all participants are running disguised. The other thing is that you can walk among the dead on the guided tour at night through the Central Cemetery. But, you can also participate in a massive Halloween parade in the Prater Amusement Park. Vienna offers different treats for all the fans of spooky things and unique ways to celebrate Halloween.

Halloween Parade in Prater

The oldest amusement park in the world, Vienna’s Prater, celebrates Halloween in the big style. The entire site of the park turns into a huge celebration venue. The celebration takes place all around the restaurants, cafes, squares, and even in the Planetarium. The culmination of the event is a massive parade of the undead. Can you imagine anything cooler than wobbling together on Halloween and walking through the Prater with a lot of other awful creatures? There is even the competition for the best and the worst costumes at the square Calafatiplatz in the heart of the amusement park. The highlight of the evening is a firework and burning the Calafati, a nine-meter-high statue of a Chinese. Next to the Ferris wheel, it's the most recognizable landmark of the Prater Amusement Park. After the parade, burning down the Califati and firework the after-show parties continue all around the park.

Walk among dead at Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof)

In the autumn, from the end of October, everyone can take part in the nightly guided walks on one of the largest cemeteries in the world, Vienna Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery). During the day, the gates of the Central Cemetery are open to everyone, and you can visit it without problems, but at night, not everyone is allowed inside. The peculiar way to experience the most famous cemetery among Vienna's nearly 50, and enjoy the unique, almost romantic, ambiance of the flickering cemetery candles in the moonlight, is to take this tour. In the night, Vienna Central Cemetery shows an entirely different side - spooky, but beautiful.

The tour introduces you to the interesting facts about the emergence of the Vienna Central Cemetery, as well as exciting details from the everyday life of gravediggers. Here you can also hear scary stories about the funeral arrangements of alleged phantoms. Quite typical for Vienna, the approach to death is with a dose of respect, but also with a considerable amount of humor. You may get the creeps and feel truly afraid, but you may also laugh your heart out.
