Vacation at Mt. Zlatibor, nature with the comfort of a city

2 minutes to read

Hiking, climbing, canyoning - Serbia has it all. But maybe it sounds … a bit too extreme. If you belong to those people who love nature and strive to spend time in it, but almost get a panic attack if not hearing car tires squeaking on the crowded streets for longer than a few hours, don't worry! Serbia’s got something for you too. Situated in Western Serbia, just outside the Mt. Tara National Park, there lies much-famed Mt. Zlatibor, where you can enjoy a vacation in nature, but with the comfort of a city.

Visiting Zlatibor

Zlatibor is a mountain of unusual beauty - evergreen forests intertwined with rolling plateaus, endless high plains, and rare kind of pine trees, all followed by luxury accommodation and fancy dining options. The rare kind of white pine that grows here is popularly called “gold pine” in Serbia, resulting in the descriptive name of the mountain (Serbian: gold-zlatni, pine-bor).

Located around 230 kilometers from Belgrade, around 300 kilometers from Novi Sad, and that much also from the Adriatic coast, Zlatibor is easily reachable by an international road.

What makes for a city comfort?

Zlatibor’s tourist popularity began in the 19th century - in 1893 to be more precise when the Serbian king Aleksandar Obrenovic visited the place and stayed in the nearby town. Nowadays, there is a huge touristic complex, that slowly grew to become a settlement, a village even, on its own.

Thanks to the beautiful natural scenery, convenient location, and variety of accommodation options, Zlatibor didn't take long to climb the list of best Serbian winter destinations. Snowy vistas during the day, and ability to get everywhere by car, brought Zlatibor international touristic fame as an urban vacation spot in nature. It’s especially popular with younger generations, as it’s well equipped even with the clubs! When you get hungry, don’t forget to ask for some kajmak - Serbs across the country agree that the best kajmak is made in the Zlatibor region!

Exploring the area

Surrounding villages are perfect for exploring the funky traditions and festivals of the area. One of those is a unique wooden ethno village Drvengrad, established as a movie set that has grown to be an integral part of Serbian touristic identity. For those more adventurous, the closeness of Mt. Tara and its rivers, promises a more demanding adventure in nature. However, if you are more into history and culture, don’t miss out on seeing the amazing White Angel Fresco in Mileseva Monastery, that was sent to space as a symbol of humanity during the last century!
