The name Tsvetnoy Boulevard (‘Boulevard of Flowers’) derives from the fact that it hosted a flower selling market long ago. It is located in the very center of Moscow. It’s lying on the way between Chistoprudny Boulevard and Tverskaya Street, the main arteria of the city. Tsvetnoy Boulevard was formed in the 1830s, and in the 1850s they started selling flowers and seedlings there. At some point in time, Tsvetnoy Boulevard was considered to be a place of many liquor houses and bars where criminals and just dubious people gathered. But soon, at the end of the 19th century, Tsvetnoy Boulevard became a place for a nice stroll, known as such nowadays.

Day by day, Tsvetnoy Boulevard developed with new buildings. So, in 1880, the Moscow Circus opened there. Today, it’s one of the best places in Moscow where parents can bring their children to spend fun time together. It’s named after Yuri Nikulin, a famous Russian actor and a clown who also managed this circus for a long time. Next to it, there is one of the best department stores in central Moscow. It’s also called ‘Tsvetnoy’, and its concept has no equivalent in the city. Thus, all the goods, such as beauty products, gadgets, clothes, and accessories, are being sold in a manner of exhibition. You can buy really unique things there.  Besides, there is a food market on the 5th floor and, as all such establishments, it has everything nearly everyone has ever wanted - European and Asian dishes with a creative twist. I bet that savory waffles and Hawaiian poke bowls are particularly good there.

Tsvetnoy Boulevard over time

Unfortunately, in the 1990s many historical buildings on Tsvetnoy Boulevard were demolished. But, after a massive reconstruction, it underwent at the beginning of the 21st century, Tsvetnoy Boulevard got back its fame of being one of the most beautiful places in Moscow for walking and enjoying the park. It has some sculptures as well, the most renowned is the monument to Yuri Nikulin right in front of the Moscow Circus he managed. Also, a group sculpture of merry clowns commemorating the iconic Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard is well known among people.

This place today is a vibrant place where you can meet a lot of people buzzing around, doing shopping, taking pictures, and strolling in the beautiful park right in the center. Being a small green oasis in the busy city, Tsvetnoy Boulevard is a place for visiting for when you need a breath of fresh air within the city boundaries.
