Trenčín, an ancient Slovakian city with a modern touch

2 minutes to read

Trenčín is a city located in the western part of the country, and it is also one of the oldest cities in Slovakia. Walking downtown, you can enjoy a unique atmosphere that reminds of the streets of ancient Rome. But with almost 60 000 inhabitants, Trenčín also became a very modern and fast-growing city, one of the most important music and culture hubs due to the biggest summer festival Pohoda happening there.

Roman heritage

Trenčín really is an ancient city. We certainly know that it was first mentioned (under a Greek name) in the year 150 CE on the Ptolemy world map. There is also significant evidence of the Roman presence in Trenčín. Right under the Trenčín castle rock, legionaries of the victorious army carved the inscription. For a long time, it was the most northern evidence of Roman soldiers in central Europe. Make sure you visit the castle, as well as the inscription since those are the dominant and most important places in the city.

What else to see

Right under the castle, you can see The Holy Trinity Plague Column built in the 18th century, as a memorial for a terrible plague that broke out and killed almost 2000 people. Headsman ́s house is also one not to miss since it is the only original building from the 16th century in the city. In Trenčín, you can also find one of the most beautiful synagogues in Slovakia built by famous German architect Richards Scheibner. Last but not least, there is also a little hill known as Marienberg with a parish church called the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the top.

Art and culture

If you want to learn more about Trenčín, its history, and traditions, then you should definitely visit Trenčianske Múzeum. Galéria Miloša Alexandra Bazovského is the biggest gallery in Trenčín, as well as a center of art, not just visual art, but also music and film. It is also worth mentioning a wide range of cultural and educational activities, such as art workshops. If you are craving more, then you can visit an artistic cinema Metro, where you can not only enjoy alternative movies, but also theater, concerts, and exhibitions.

Pohoda Festival

Trenčín is probably the busiest during the summer, because of the biggest music festival in Slovakia called Pohoda. If you plan to come during the festival season, then book your hotel well in advance, even several months earlier, because it will really get busy. People from all over the world attend the festival to enjoy music, chill atmosphere, different kinds of workshops and debates, and the best Slovak street food options. Pohoda festival is so good and important that even the President of Slovakia attends it every year!

You can walk downtown, admire the historical castle, and feel the presence of the Roman Empire, or you can party hard at the biggest music festival Pohoda. You choose. Whatever sounds better to you, Trenčín should be on your travel list because it is a city to remember.
