The ultimate “WOW” location, Civita di Bagnoregio

1 minutes to read

Civita di Bagnoregio is a one-of-a-kind village in the Northern area of Lazio, near the border with Umbria. The town sits on top of a hill and dominates the surrounding canyon creating a stunning and breath-taking panorama that often leaves the visitors scratching their heads wondering how it was possible to build a settlement in such an extreme location; the town, in fact, is connected to the rest of the World by just a narrow bridge. No cars are allowed in and the visitors need to pay an entrance fee to get inside (3/5 euros), a recent and debatable decision by the public administration. Nonetheless visiting this place is a must if you find yourself nearby. I mean, just look at it:

Civita is often referred to as the “Dying City”; the plateau where it is situated is made by friable volcanic tuff that suffers from erosion, and the winds and the rains increase the effects of this natural phenomenon. Throughout the centuries, the city was founded more than 2500 years ago, many buildings on the hill’s cliff collapsed, anticipating a destiny that now seems already written for this unique location.

Once you get here you’ll be able to admire diverse styles of architecture, a beautiful Duomo, an elegant Bishop Palace, and some man-made constructions, such as a tunnel that connects the city with the underneath canyon. Civita’s economy is based on tourism incomes, do the right thing and go take a look!
