The Queen among Chocolate Cakes “Sacher Torte”

Vienna being the "coffee house capital of the world" developed distinguish culture of cake making. Almost every traditional coffee house and hotel tried to offer its freshly made cakes, which became culinary masterpieces and were offered only in respective venue. It was matter of prestige to have the best cake in Vienna and "torte wars" became integral part of Viennese culture.

One of the most famous cakes in the world developed on the wings of the sweetest war in the human history is Vienna Sacher Torte. The cake was created in 1832 by 16-year-old apprentice, Franz Sacher for Austrian nobility, after the head chef got ill. After his death recipe for the cake was perfected to its current form by his oldest son Eduard and its recipe is still closely guarded secret.

The original version of this chocolate delicacy can only be found at 6 locations in the world. Hotels Sacher in Vienna and Salzburg, Cafes Sacher in Graz and Innsbruck, Sacher shop in Bolzano and Vienna airport. Around 360 thousand handmade Sacher Tortes are sold annually.
