The mysterious land of Inverness and its Loch

Many people have heard of the city of Inverness and the Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessie" which lives in this popular lake. The truth is the area of Inverness located in the Scottish highlands is full of interesting places to visit and beauty all around. As it is common is Scotland, the weather is quite cold and rainy, so the best time to visit is probably in summer – especially for those who are used to the warm Mediterranean temperatures like me. You can also see some beautiful castles in Scotland here, or learn about some of the most isolated camping spots in Scotland.

Inverness (which means “mouth of the river Ness”) is the capital of the Highlands and the city itself offers many experiences for tourists and for travellers – you can visit the Inverness castle, St Andrew's Cathedral or walk along the river banks and across the hanging bridge to enjoy the views and some quietness. The city is located at the mouth of the Ness River, that flows from the very close Loch Ness, giving the name to this city, 37 km away from the city in the southwest direction. But certainly, you can’t miss a visit to the loch if you get lucky and have the opportunity to visit this fantastic part of the Scottish countryside.

The Loch Ness and Nessie...

Loch Ness is the second largest loch and the second deepest in Scotland - and it is the largest in the British Islands in terms of water volume. It’s the perfect kind of place to enjoy the beauty of nature, castle landscapes, and lonely lighthouses. Its deepest point is 230 m, which leads me to talk about the famous legend and stories of a monster which lives in the darkest deepest points of the Loch – Nessie. Nessie is a cryptic (like several other animals that have been derived from anecdotal or other evidence considered insufficient by mainstream science), large and unknown animal, which was brought to the people’s attention in 1993 through a photograph. However, there is no real evidence that prove the existence of this creature that has driven many scientists a bit crazy.

The picture above shows the ruins of the Urquhart Castle beside Loch Ness and the nice views to the lake and to the countryside that has plenty of history and that is visited by many people during the year. You can go up to the Grant Tower and enjoy the views over the lake from one the biggest castles in the Scottish Highlands.
