The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina

2 minutes to read

Novi Sad’s inhabitants are proud of their city that is often attributed as a nonconforming city of arts and culture. The largest institution supporting contemporary art in Novi Sad, serving as a performance venue, and nurturing the tender development of the younger forms of art is The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina.

Art has been one of the raw, basic ways for people to express their inner thoughts, and pass the immaterial knowledge down the generations. We are the witnesses of a huge, unstoppable evolution of art - think fish-like sculptures of the prehistoric findings, medieval art, baroque, expressionism, the shifting trends in contemporary art, and so on. This is one of the main reasons why many art lovers and admirers take a special interest in contemporary and modern art forms, as they carve the path of the everlasting evolutionary progress in art.

A bit of history

The Museum was first opened in 1966 as the Gallery of Contemporary Art, and 30 years later, it was officially acknowledged as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Sad. The role of this museum in Serbian culture scene is actually even more extensive than that. The museum collections include important works from the whole northern province of Serbia - Vojvodina, and therefore the current, most recent name has changed to The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina

The collection

The collection of the museum consists of a standard exhibition that features important works of Serbian contemporary artists and performers, but also extends to the whole Balkan region, including the exemplary works of post-Yugoslavian artists, and even wider by featuring several world-renowned artists. The Museum’s colorful fund contains  the paintings, prints, new media, sculptures, installations, and drawings, counting more than 2,500 artworks

One of the character traits of Vojvodina is its diversity. The region, its people, its artists, and also its institutions, take pride in the cultural salad that’s successfully been present in this area for a very long time. The multiculturality is reflected in well-established relations with other cultures and the presence of their motives in the contemporary art pieces - Hungarian, Slovakian, German, Croatian.

Best part? It's free.

The entrance is always free, and the museum is open every day except Mondays, from 10 am to 6 pm and from 10 am to 2 pm on the weekends.

This iconic place in Novi Sad sometimes hosts the educational events, promoting the concepts of contemporary art, and bringing it closer to the general public. For the city of arts and culture, it’s only one of the must-stops on the long list: the art hub in the medieval fortress, Serbian National Theatre, an old synagogue turned into concert venue… Although most art admirers will find valuable pieces here, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina will give a great overlook of the correspondence between the international and Serbian, or moreover ex-Yugoslavian, art scenes to all its visitors.
