Tea in an indoor garden: Aoyama Flower Market Tea House

3 minutes to read

For me, a good café has to have three main ingredients- chic interior design that is great for photos, delicious and beautiful food and drinks, and a warm, relaxing atmosphere. Tokyo does indeed have plenty of excellent tea houses and cafés that check all the boxes, and it is a treat to explore all of them. One of my favourites in Tokyo is the Aoyama Flower Market tea house. Its dainty sweets and pretty drinks are a delight, and the setting of the café is just like an indoor flower garden. It is a beautiful place for girlfriends to chit chat over afternoon tea, and a perfect setting for a romantic date.

Aoyama Flower Market is actually a flower shop with a café attached, and walking through the flower shop is such a lovely experience, as you are surrounded by blooming seasonal flowers of every colour, and can breathe in the scent of fresh flowers. You will definitely feel like buying some flowers or a cute potted plant for yourself, and if you are on a date, maybe you should get some for your partner! They also sell an assortment of trinkets and floral skincare products.

To get inside, there is sometimes a queue, depending on the time of day. On my visit, I had to wait for quite a while. This is as seating space in the café is limited, and given how lovely the café is, guests want to linger. However, in my opinion, it is worth the wait. The interior of the café somewhat resembles a greenhouse, and is fully decorated with – flowers and other plants of course! It is cosy in the café, with a very calm and relaxing vibe. They also place freshly cut flowers at every table, which is a very nice touch. The café has a selection of hot meals and salads at lunch, but their specialty would be their floral-themed sweets and tea menu. It is very instagrammable, and tastes good as well!

I found their flower parfait to be one of the most beautiful and delicious desserts I have ever eaten. It is absolutely gorgeous with a delicate floral flavour, and is made with rose jelly, berry mousse, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, and edible flower petals. I also enjoyed the french toast with fruits, ice cream, whipped cream, and edible flowers. Everything on their sweets menu is just too pretty! They also have a great selection of herbal teas, sodas, and juices to complement your meal.

Do note that there are actually three branches of Aoyama Flower Market Tea House, the one at Aoyama being the flagship store. The flagship store is really close to Shibuya and Omotesando, which makes it convenient to drop by after visiting some of the other attractions there. Sit back, relax and enjoy your perfect afternoon tea in this lovely indoor garden!
