Slovenian Stolp ljubezni: A tower where love grows

2 minutes to read

Stolp ljubezni or the Tower of love is the tallest wooden lookout tower in Slovenia, mainly known for its special and unique name and the glorious view it has to offer. Initially intended to be made out of iron, it was built of wood and is now expected to remain standing for at least 50 years and spreading love for a long time in the future.

In the name of love

The name of the lookout tower Stolp ljubezni was created by the locals, because of the location where the tower was built. In the village of Žusem, on top of a hill, there is a church dedicated to St. Valentine. That is where the inspiration for the name of Tower of love came from, as the church dedicated to the patron saint of love is located close to the tower.

A bell at the top of the tower is inviting all visitors, not only the ones in love, to ring it while making a wish. Being built not too long ago, Stolp ljubezni is still young, and a ceremony like a wedding or an engagement has not taken place there yet. But I am sure that with an encouragement of the enthusiastic locals it won’t take long before it does.

Stolp ljubezni was built in 2015 and is approximately 26 meters tall, having 116 stairs leading to the top. When you reach the top, the stunning view, which is extending even to Slovenia’s neighbouring countries, will amaze you. You can observe the far away landscape of Croatia, Austria and Hungary, and with a bit of luck and nice weather you can even see the highest mountain in Slovenia – Triglav.

With hiking being a very popular way of spending free time in Slovenia, there are many different hiking paths leading to Stolp ljubezni and even traditional hikes being organised every year. One of the traditional hikes is called Valentinov nočni pohod, which translates as the Night hike of St. Valentine. It takes place annually, on a Saturday, the closest to the date of February 14th, also known as Valentine’s day. Another traditional event is the hike that takes place on March 8th in honour of the International Women’s Day. These kinds of events usually attract large groups of people, but if you are not a fan of big crowds, a trip to the top of Stolp ljubezni on a less busy day is a nice way to spend your afternoon with friends or family surrounded by nature and stunning views.

So, if you have the chance, come and visit our Tower of love. On Stolp ljubezni, Slovenia’s tallest wooden lookout tower, you can let your love grow and blossom whilst enjoying the breath-taking view. If you have some more time on your schedule, you might want to squeeze some extra fun into your vacations and visit some of the near spa resorts, that will provide you with adrenaline experience.
