Sand Castle in the Steel City

2 minutes to read

For a long time, Linz the capital city of Upper Austria, had the bad reputation of a dusty, grey and dirty industrial city, nicknamed Steel City in Austria. This reputation it owed to its largest employer, the steel mills of Voestalpine AG, one of the biggest steel producers in the world. From the end of the 1970s, Linz tried to get away from this image and numerous environmental measures and regulations for industrial companies were made in order to improve air quality. Today is Linz one of the cleanest cities in Austria. However, bad image doesn’t go away very easily. Sandburg meaning Sand Castle is the location which helps Linz changes the bad reputation and represents itself as something more than steel city.
