Lovcen is mountain and national park in southwestern Montenegro. It is the border between the Montenegrin coast and the continental part of the country. Beneath Lovcen, small town Cetinje is situated, former royal capital of Montenegro.
Lovcen has a huge significance for Montenegrins. It's the ''Black mountain'' after which Montenegro got its name. At the summit of Jezerski peak is placed a mausoleum of Petar Petrovic Njegos - a prince-bishop of Montenegro, poet and philosopher, very important figure for Serbs and Montenegrins.
Lovcen has rich natural and historical heritage. Its two highest peaks are Stirovnik (1,749 m) i Jezerski vrh (1,657 m). Ivanova korita is the most popular recreational spot, well visited during whole year, especially in the summer.
Old villages, houses and cottages make authentic environment and famous old road from Njegusi (birth-place village of Montenegro's royal family Petrovic) to Kotor, with 25 hairpin serpentines will take you back to the past, when this was the only road to the seaside.
There is still, in Njegusi, the original house where the Petrovic family used to live in. Well-preserved traditional architecture is only one of the Njegusi village numerous attractions. One of the most important of them is its significance for Montenegrin cuisine. You have to try famous njeguski sir (cheese) and njeguska prsuta (prosciutto) if you really want to experience what Montenegro tastes like.
