Description

The NMR is a medium-sized museum, but within the natural history sector one of the larger institutions, with a relatively large substantive influence. The NMR is unique in the Netherlands as regards attention to urban ecology (urban ecology). The museum is housed in a historic building (Villa Dijkzigt, the former Van Hoboken family house, an ijks monument) and manages a collection of rich tradition dating back to the mid-19th century. The museum was founded in 1927 as the Museum of Natural History Rotterdam. From 1986 to 2005, the name was temporarily different: at that time, the term 'Natuurmuseum Rotterdam' was found to be 'dynamic'. In order to include the museum's field of work, the name is later changed to the Natural History Museum Rotterdam.
