Description

The indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego have left us their tangible legacy, generally hidden from view, buried just below the vegetation. They are very vulnerable to mining and oil activities, which involve the exploitation of quarries and large earth movements. They are also vulnerable to the increase in population and economic activities, which require the continuous opening of roads and the urbanization of public lands. If we Fuegians have to love our land, and take care of it, we think it is important to know the history of our ancestors, like the ancestral peoples Yagan (Yámana), Selk'nam, Haush and Kawesqar. But to understand where we are and where we are going, we must delve even deeper into our identity as humanity. That is why we decided to install a museum where in the First Room we go the formation of the earth, the human migratory currents up to the population of America; and the last glacial stage in the austral zone of the continent (Tierra del Fuego region of Tierra del Fuego) after which the first towns have entered to populate the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. In the Second Room, through maps and panels, reference is made to the arrival of Europeans and encounters with native peoples here in the south. By means of scale models in the Third Room, we show what the ancient way of life of the Yágan (Yámana) and Selk'nam people was like. Thanks to Ushuaia is a tourist city, we can keep the museum without receiving subsidies from the State, with the collection of an entrance to visitors. During the year we receive visits from schools, free of charge. The Museum organizes cultural meetings that are repeated annually, and participates in activities organized by others. .................................................. ................. The museum was working until April 30, 2016 in an old house located on Rivadavia Street 56. During its 16 years the Museum was open daily in high season (October to March) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and in the low season or winter from 12 a.m. to 7 p.m. From 1 ° MAY 2016, by moving the establishment, will remain closed until further notice. Soon we will announce the schedules of a TEMPORARY OFFICE in RIVADAVIA 64 until the re-opening of the Yámana Museum-Museo Pueblos Vivos.
