Gardens of Lisbon: Eduardo VII

2 minutes to read

Next to the charming Garden Amália Rodrigues is one of Lisbon’s more expansive parks, and also one of the most iconic! For those visiting Lisbon, it’s really hard not to come across Parque Eduardo VII, as it is sort of like and extension of the busy Avenida da Liberdade, right in the heart of the city. It's likely you’ve taken or at least seen the wonderful photos you can take of the avenue and Chiado from the (crowded) top of the park. But just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s not underappreciated, because this park is much more than just a pretty view point!

Eduardo VII is a larger park than it may seem (and it already seems pretty big). It has two main walkways with a grassy (perfect for picnics) avenue right between them, and this is what many consider to be THE park, which is understandable, since a lot its main events happen around these lanes, like the whimsical Christmas Fair, the Book Fair (which is a must-attend) and ocasional concerts and sporting events! But on each side you can find a more (hidden) spaces to rest, eat or just take a sit, by the shade of a myriad of trees!

On the right side (going up) there are pathways with many benches and tables, and even a café. And, of course, the grand Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, a wonderful sight, this magnificent pavilion is dedicated to great portuguese sporting accomplishments.

To the left there are large playgrounds for children to run and play, tennis courts, for more sports related activities, and the Estufa Fria, a greenhouse that holds a great variety of plant life, from more exotic and tropical to dry and austere, it really deserves its own article.

As you can see, the wonderful park holds more potential than just a got selfie with Lisbon and Tejo on the back! Take a peak behind the trees and discover more!
