Game of Thrones filming locations in Girona

Girona is a medieval city and the capital of the Girona Province in the region of Catalonia. This unique place is a full historical and cultural heritage which explains why there are so many incredible landmarks to visit and why it was chosen as one of HBO’s Game of Thrones filming locations for Season 6. As soon as you arrive in Girona’s old town, you can easily recognise many of these spots. But keep reading because I will tell you about some of the most spectacular Game of Thrones filming locations in Girona, where HBO filmed for seven different episodes in Season 6: The Cathedral of Girona, The Arab Baths and The monastery of Sant Pere de Galligats.  

If you are a fan of the series, just like me and many others, Girona should be at the top of your list of places to visit in Catalonia. Myriad streets and buildings served as places in Braavos and King's Landing, and the monastery's interior was used as the Citadel in the Old town. However, I guarantee you will not regret visiting the city as I think Girona is one of the nicest medieval places in the community. 

The Cathedral of Girona

Let's start with what probably is the main symbol of the city and its most visited sight, The Cathedral of Girona. The church of Santa Maria (Cathedral of Gerona) is the cathedral seat of the Bishopric of Girona. Its main peculiarity is that it has the widest Gothic nave in the world (22.98 metres), which is also the widest nave of any style except for that of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican (25 metres wide).

The cathedral is in the centre of the old city, known as the “Fuerza Vieja”. The stairs and the facade of Girona Cathedral are like two more characters in the sixth season of Game of Thrones. The first appearance of the cathedral, in the sixth episode, brings us Queen Margaery walking the walk of atonement from the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing. In the same scene, we can also see James Lannister on his white horse climbing the stairs and going through the old town streets leading the Tyrrel troops. The fact that they covered the steps with water and sugar so that the horse would not slip was not a problem for the Archdiocese of Girona, and they also covered the cathedral statues with cloths to film these scenes.

The Arab Baths 

There is a place in Girona that cannot be missed: The Arab Baths. In one of her many dangerous adventures in Braavos, Arya Stark ends up being chased into these baths, which must be part of your visit to the city even if you are not a follower of the series. The Arab Baths of Girona are located in the heart of the city, between the church of Sant Feliu, the city wall and the Cathedral. They were declared a cultural asset of national interest and are within a late, stunning Romanesque building built in 1194, imitating the structure of the North African Muslim baths.

The monastery of Sant Pere de Galligats

In episode tenth, the last of the season, a new location arrives at the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligats. The interior of this location was used to say goodbye to Season 6. The history of the monastery is related to its use in Game of Thrones. Then, the monastery was a centre of culture and knowledge, with copyist monks. In the series, it is the library of Antigua, the centre of knowledge of the great masters of Westeros, where Sam can become a Master.

Game of Thrones is probably one of the best series I have ever watched, and HBO chose a wide range of places in my country to film. Girona is one of them, and as I said before, I am not surprised since its historical and cultural heritage makes it the perfect filming location for such a great series. On your visit to Girona, whether you are a fan of Game of Thrones or not, do not forget to visit the main symbol of the city, The Cathedral of Girona, as well as the Arab Baths and The monastery of Sant Pere de Galligats. They truly are a big part of the charm of the medieval city of Girona, located in Catalonia.
