Experience the Middle Ages at Žužemberk Castle

2 minutes to read

The Lower Carniola is one of the traditional regions of Slovenia, well-known for its winemaking, the most famous one being Cviček, and other interesting customs, like the craftwork of Suha roba or traditional Slovenian woodcraft. Besides that, the area is home to many hidden gems and charming country-side towns. One of them is the town of Žužemberk with a castle, dating back to the Middle Ages, called Žužemberk Castle with an impressive panoramic view of the diverse landscape and a unique experience of the region’s cultural heritage.

A bit of history

The origin of the fortress dates back to the 13th century, but the form of the castles, which is known today, was fully created in the 16th century, with seven big defense towers. Other renovations started after the Second World War when the castle was damaged, and they are still ongoing until the present day. Since the castle is still in the stage of renovation, a part of it is still in ruins. Nevertheless, the fortification is well preserved and maintained. There is no entry fee, and there is a restaurant near the castle, where you can have a meal or a drink.

Trški dnevi Festival

When you arrive at Žužemberk Castle, you will see a big fortress rising above the charming Slovenian town, and the river Krka running through it. During the summer months, a festival called Trški dnevi, or Market Town Days, takes place in the castle, starting in the middle of July and lasting for two weeks. During this time, the town of Žužemberk is transformed into a centre of fun cultural and sports events and other types of entertainment. This festival captures the spirit of the Middle Ages in fun but educating and interesting way. Many groups from Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia and Serbia participate in the event, implementing different performances. Trški dnevi are undoubtedly the largest tourist event taking place in the area of Suha Krajina and one of the largest in the region of Southeastern Slovenia, connecting and representing past and present-day culture and traditions.

I would recommend visiting the town of Žužemberk and its picturesque castle in the warmer months of the year, especially in summer, when the beautiful landscape will truly impress you. Žužemberk Castle is also very popular among the locals as a wedding venue because of the unique experience with a hint of Middle Ages spirit and a magnificent view.
