Discover the idyllic island of Ven

2 minutes to read

Just half an hour outside of the west coast of Skåne lies the idyllic island of Ven. Here is why you should discover this picturesque island.

Ven is known for its stunning nature and dramatic cliff sides that immerse straight from the ocean. With sandy beaches, hiking and biking tracks, as well as plenty of cafés and restaurants, Ven is a popular summer destination. Most travel from Landskrona in Skåne by boat that takes around half an hour. As the idyllic island is located in the channel of Oresund between Sweden and Denmark, it can also be reached from Copenhagen.

What to do

Ven is only 7,5 square kilometers big, but still one of south Sweden’s most popular travel destinations. The easiest way to get around the island is by bike. The yellow tandem bikes are almost becoming synonyms with Ven, as they are seen everywhere on the small island.

Some buses go around the island- and sometimes even horse carriages! But on a bike, you can cycle either along the winding paths and the windy seaside, or the many fields of the island and its grassy hillsides. Stop for a swim at one of the sandy beaches or jump into the sea from the cliffs. Don’t forget to visit the nature reserve Backafallen.

The famous Danish scientist and researcher Tycho Brahe, mostly known for his discoveries in astrology, started a research institute at Ven. Brahe lived and worked on the island at the end of the 16th century. Today visitors can explore his observatory and learn about Brahe’s accomplishments in the Tycho Brahe museum. Outside the former observatory, lies a big garden. Brahe cultivated a range of different fruits, herbs, and plants as he also worked with alchemy and medicine. His work is thus present both inside and outside of the museum.

Eat & sleep

If you have a sweet tooth or been biking all day in the summer heat, be sure to stop and get ice cream. Several places sell locally produced ice cream from the factory on Ven. Another specialty on Ven is smoked fish, which is found at the many smokehouses around the island.

Many visit the Spirit of Hven Backafallsbyn, which is a four-star resort with a fine dining restaurant. They also have a famous whiskey bar for those interested in high-quality spirits. Stay over at the hotel or just visit the restaurant. For those wishing to stay a night at Ven, there are plenty of different accommodation options, such as cabins, camping sites, and hotels.

It is recommended to bring cash and a bank card to Ven, as there are no cash machines on the island.

No matter if you visit for a day or two, Ven leaves travellers with lots of different experiences.
