Your secret greek island, Kefalonia

3 minutes to read

Being Greek, I have many times found myself in conversations, where I have been constantly asked by international people to provide them with info about the “hidden” and non-touristic islands that are worth visiting while in Greece. The options of where to go in Greece are seemingly endless, and they all look great. Whatever you are after, a holiday in Greece has something for everyone, it is just a question of knowing where to look!

To get to the point and save you some time from crawling the web for info, I have decided to start this series of pages, "Your secret greek island" during which, I will be presenting you each week an awesome greek island, out of the beaten track! I will do my best to provide you with the most local suggestions about each one of them; promise! Whether you are looking for a holiday with your significant other and your family, or a party vacation with your group of friends, stay tuned, cause I am pretty sure that in this series you will find what you are seeking!

Kefalonia

The picturesque island of Kefalonia is, in fact, the largest, and probably the most beautiful one of the Ionian islands. Located west of mainland Greece, Kefalonia is particularly popular for its scenic crystal blue beaches, dramatic landscapes, mysterious caves, its delicious seafood and of course, its fishing villages. All of those bring straight to mind a typical Greek island, are they not? Right, Kefalonia is most likely one of the places that you have probably seen on postcards since it uniquely combines the features that everyone thinks of, while on the search for their perfect greek holiday.

Kefalonia has inspired millions of visitors with its beauty, and became particularly famous after becoming the filming location of the movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. If you have missed it, then click on the link that follows, it is definitely worth a watch!

The island offers a great variety of cultural and sightseeing activities for all tastes and pockets. A stroll in the island guarantees you an experience of a lifetime and trust me, you would not be able to stop talking about it and take your eyes off of your pictures upon departing. Of course, there are a couple of places that should not be missed while there; the cave of Melissani, as well as the island’s main harbour are areas definitely must visit (those two definitely stole my heart upon my last visit to the island!).

The cave of Melissani

Do you get fascinated by the natural sculptures and their majestic hard to explain beauty? If yes, then a must-visit while in Kefalonia, is no doubt the cave and the lake of Melissani; beautiful waters with changing shades of blue as the sun sets, honey-like brown walls and countless stalactites will take your breath away and travel you to another, mythical and magical world. The cave is said to be a wonder of nature and it is one of Kefalonia’s most impressive sights. This magic landscape is particularly enchanting due to the fact that its roof has collapsed and you have a clear view of the sky while in the cave! Incredible is it not?! Due to the island's interesting reefs, nowadays many diving centres have opened in Kefalonia’s city centre and offer a great variety of unique and guided day trip options! Do not miss it!

The island’s harbour village, Fiskardo

One of the places that specifically enchanted me while at the island, is the main harbour, Firkardo. As previously mentioned, Kefalonia is a fishing island and that is particularly seen upon arrival to its harbour. While there, you can watch the fishermen and sailors tending their vessels, and enjoy a stroll along the paved narrow streets, which are filled with local tavernas, coffee shops, little artistic shops selling handmade souvenirs, and of course flowers! Yes, if you are into flowers- especially the ones hanging from the roofs- then you will enjoy the area’s landscapes for sure! They are undoubtedly ideal for summer pictures!

Like all the Ionian islands, Kefalonia, offers crystal waters, sandy beaches, impressive trekking paths, an always shining sun and of course, delicious local meals (you can now take for granted that I’d suggest trying some of their local fish dishes, simply delicious)!

As a big fan of the Ionian Sea and of its blue and cold-refreshing waters, I feel that it is my responsibility to suggest this dreamy destination and its magic beaches! What are you waiting for?!
