The beauty in black: the Lovrenc Lakes in Pohorje

2 minutes to read

Heading out on a beautiful sunny day and having a walk through the woods, while listening and observing nature is one of the most calming and soul-fulfilling things. It is especially satisfying when you have a chance to do that in a country you are currently travelling around or visiting for the first time. In Slovenia, these types of destinations are, most definitely, not rare sights. An excellent example of a natural getaway like that is the hidden gem of the Pohorje mountain range – the Lovrenc Lakes or Lovrenška jezera. The destination is located in the immediate vicinity of the second biggest Slovenian town, Maribor, the home of the oldest vine in the world. The lakes' unique trade is their colour, which seems to be completely black from the surface, further emphasising their natural beauty.

The place of tranquility and beautiful views

Because the Lovrenc Lakes are powered by rainwater, the number of lakes is not always the same, and it varies depending on the season. Their mysterious and unique black colour comes from peat, which is deposited in them, creating this distinctive look. On some days, you will encounter up to 10 lakes and, if you are lucky, up to 20 when there is enough rainfall. Despite the high interest and a growing number of visitors, the place retains its natural peace and tranquillity. You can also visit and climb the wooden lookout tower nearby, which was erected near the highest lake, that offers an unforgettable view stretching far around the landscape. This is also a beautiful place for photography, especially when the weather happens to be bright and sunny, which is often the case; sometimes even without a single cloud on the clear blue sky!

Choose your trail

The Lovrenc Lakes are located at an altitude of 1520 meters. The destination is very popular among Slovenian people, who often decide to visit it on a day trip during the weekend or holidays with their family and friends. Several trails are leading to the lakes, all of which are quite easy and convenient for everyone. You will know you are close to your destination when a well preserved wooden path starts to appear in front of you. The trail to the lakes usually begins at the Rogla Ski Resort, continues through the woods and meadows, and then along the wooden footbridges, which offer a walk between and around the swampy lakes. For inexperienced hikers and people who are not too skilled at orientation, this destination is a perfect choice, as the trail is well-marked and easy to navigate. From your chosen path, it usually takes approximately three hours to reach the Lovrenc Lakes.
