Have fun and get amazed at Neusiedlersee

2 minutes to read

Just as I promised you in my latest article on Fertő, Hungary, I am now going to show you my favourite destinations near the pleasantly warm water of the lake, but this time on the Austrian side. First of all, as we are now on our neighbours’ soil, it might be appropriate to call it Neusiedlersee instead. You will likely hear it this way much frequently, even though we are speaking about the same lake. As I previously mentioned, the best beaches of Neusiedlersee or Fertő can all be found in Austria, yet my present article is not about introducing them to you. On the contrary, I would rather like you to get to know other tourist attractions, that are worth visiting without a bathing suit, in order to have fun and get amazed. I firmly believe you will be able to find decent beaches on your own anywhere anyway.

Europe’s largest open-air stage

My first recommendation is the stone quarry of St. Margarethen im Burgenland, part of the World Heritage, which is Europe's oldest and one of the largest stone mines. Locals call it Römersteinbruch, and it is actually the twin brother of the Hungarian stone quarry, in Fertőrákos, where similarly to its Austrian pair, a cave theatre is operating. Römersteinbruch's spectacular venue in St. Margarethen is home to Europe's largest open-air stage, where opera plays are performed several times a week during the summer season.

A must-see element of excursions

The Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt, which was the central residence of the famous historical family, is the most beautiful baroque castle in Burgenland. With its high-standard, richly furnished rooms and a magnificent park, the castle is a must-see element of excursions around Neusiedlersee. Owing to its spotless shape, the Esterházy’s former winter and main residence provides us with a vision of what life in the princes’ age could be like. The castle, by the way, is still the center of the region’s cultural life: the building is a perfect place for various cultural and social events.

Entertainment for all ages

Austria's largest leisure park is stretching on 145,000 square meters only a couple kilometres from the west coast of Neusiedlersee. For travellers with children, Familypark is definitely going to be the highlight of the trip near the lake. It consists of over 80 themed games and shows, petting zoo and restaurants in fairy-tale woods, guaranteeing that the whole family will have fun and get amazed. This small Disneyland could be an unforgettable day-long program and entertainment for all ages, from babies to teenagers and everyone indeed.
