History of the building

The Museum of Fine Arts is located in the Rustaveli Avenue, and it includes three buildings that combine public cultural exhibit areas. The first National Gallery was opened in 1920, while the new building started functioning from this October. The museum is built exactly on the place where the Artists’ House was located. However, it was destroyed together with the surrounding buildings during the civil war in 1991-1992. A waterproof and durable foundation is a guarantee that the museum’s priceless collection will be safely kept for decades. The exhibition space covers 7,000 square meters  on the three floors. The museum also has a storage facility that is equipped with the latest technologies that can hold up to 6,000 pictures, a big conference hall and one more exhibition space for temporary expositions.

There are 31 exhibition halls in the Georgian Museum of Fine Arts. It is rich with approximately 140,000 items of Georgian, Russian, Asian and Western European paintings and artifacts. More than 3500 artworks of 78 well-known Georgian artists, who were popular in the last 80 years, are displayed in the museum. Apart from the oil and graphic paintings, there are different interesting sculptures that are exhibited in the museum. An eagle, that you can see on the façade and inside the interior, was created based on the miniature sculptures, that were discovered during archeological excavations in Vani, in Western Georgia and date back to 2-1 centuries BC.
