Fun in the sky, Sarıgerme Kite Festival!

2 minutes to read

If you are looking for the description of paradise, well, look no more because it can definitely be found in Turkey! Every corner in Turkey is a paradise but especially Muğla, with its spectacular (and expensive) cities, such as Bodrum and Marmaris!  If you are looking for a cheaper place without a compromise, you have to check out Sarıgerme, which is absolutely gorgeous especially during its famous attraction, the fun annual Kite Festival! During this super entertaining festival, which takes place at a long sandy beach, people from all age groups come together to fly hundreds of kites on the first Sunday of May every year! And, if you are lucky enough to win, you can even be given small presents! You can also enjoy many fun side activities as well. So, if you are looking for an outstanding experience, here is your guide.

Sarıgerme Kite Festival was first organised in 2005 as a local event for every age group by the Sarıgerme village headman and the Sarıgerme Environment, Culture and Education Association (SARÇED), along with the help of the local hotels of the region, which contribute with free food! During this extremely fun festival, you can eat, drink and attend the kite contest! But I have to warn you, contestants are required to participate only with hand-made kites. There is also a jury who score the performances based on several criteria, including the overall appearance of the kite, and its ability to fly high. The festival starts at around 11 am and ends at 5 pm, at a  public beach of Sarigerme Village. If you don't want to attend the competition, you can simply eat delicious food, while watching hundreds of colorful kites sailing in the sky!

To reach here by plane, Sarıgerme is only 12 km away from Muğla Dalaman Airport. From there, you can easily find a taxi or rent a car. Sarıgerme village and its spectacular beach are located at the Ortaca district of Muğla, which is 89 km from the city center. From the city center of Muğla, you can take Ortaca buses to reach the Ortaca, then take a taxi/local transportation from Ortaca to the Sarıgerme beach
