Feel at one with nature at the Fuentes de Algar

3 minutes to read

The province of Alicante in the Valencian Community offers its visitors plenty of options to discover and I have been lucky to explore many of them already. I have written about Benidorm, a very touristic city in Alicante also known as The New York city of the Mediterranean coast, due to its hotel industry, beaches and skyscrapers. This city has the most high-rise buildings per capita in the world and is a very nice destination to choose when looking for nice and long beaches, big resorts or a non-stop party. However, if you choose to go to Benidorm, you need to know that there is more than that, only a few kilometres away from the city. You could find what looks like a movie setting, more specifically, one of the Jurassic Park movie settings, surrounded by amazing and magical landscapes. In this story, I am going to tell you about one of these exact places that I visited recently, in the middle of nature, called Fuentes de Algar (Algar Waterfalls in English).

The river Algar (which means "cave" in Arabic) created spectacular waterfalls here, and several sources spring from the rock in the area. Swimming in these pools really feels like a luxury, as the crystal clear waters are also known as a “source of health”. It is relatively easy to find them, since Algar Waterfalls are located at only 15 km from Benidorm and 3 km from the centre of Callosa d'en Sarrià (the closest village). This incredible natural area is also suitable for families, and you can find plenty of services around the area like parking, toilets, first aid, Arboretum, picnic areas and camping. I must add to this the Dino Park Algar, where the little ones can have a wonderful time. You will be amazed by the beautiful views, its well-cared-for conservation and its vast ecological richness since Fuentes de Algar was declared a 'Wetland' protected by the Valencian Government.

One of the coolest things you can do when you get there, is taking a paradisaical route of 1.5 kilometres, and finding a quiet spot to do some meditation, to go swimming, and have some food while enjoying this area. Although there are plenty of restaurants around Algar Waterfalls, I totally recommend you take you own food, because I truly believe that food tastes better when you are in nature. The route is very enjoyable and easy, and you will find several shady areas. I think you need suitable footwear to avoid hurting your feet on the stones though, especially in the water. The ideal thing is to wear comfortable walking shoes and, as an alternative option to go swimming or paddling in the water, take your flip flops or swimming shoes with you (as I should have done).

A swim in the Algar Waterfalls during hot weather can be great therapy especially because of the excellent temperature of the clean crystal clear waters (although one may find the water a bit chilly). Algar Waterfalls is the perfect alternative to escape Benidorm, although I also recommend that you visit Guadalest and its castle, just a short distance away from the Algar Waterfalls and considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Find the perfect spot in this magical area, swim in its crystal clear waters, and feel at one with nature in Algar Waterfalls.
