With Riga being the largest city in Latvia — and the largest of the three Baltic countries — there is plenty to do. Riga was the 2014 European Capital of Culture, and rightfully so. With multiple theaters, as well as the Latvian National Opera, the high concentration of Art Nouveau buildings, and the Riga Castle, Riga is full of art and culture. If sports are more your style, you can catch basketball, ice hockey, and football games here. Outside of Riga, there is still much to explore. Ligatne is a beautiful town surrounded by a forest, perfect for exploring nature on one of its many trails. Located on the Gauja river valley, Sigulda is a charming town with an open-air opera festival during the summer and winter sports like skiing and bobsledding during the winter.
