Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol

Bordering on Switzerland and Austria, this mountainous region – dubbed the 'South Tyrol' – with its deep valleys and numerous lakes (including the famous Lake Garda) was once part of Austria, and was annexed to Italy only at the end of the First World War....

The hundreds of kilometres of ski trails and its renowned resorts (like San Martino di Castrozza) will delight aficionados of winter sports as well as hikers in the summer. Its position between Germanic and Latin Europe has endowed it with a distinctive charm that is further accentuated by its medieval castles and Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, such as those of Trento and Bolzano.
