Maharashtra

Covering a large portion of the Deccan Plateau in the western part of the peninsula, Maharashtra is India’s third-largest state. The capital city of this second-most populous state in India is Mumbai, which is also the most inhabited place in the country....

Maharashtra is certainly the most developed region of India, and consequently the wealthiest state as well. Hence, no surprise that it is also one of the most visited areas in India. With its world’s largest film industry, upscale gastronomy and active nightlife, Mumbai is a great place to experience modern India. At the same time, Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and also known as the “Oxford of the East”, while Nashik is the wine capital of India. From endless white-sand beaches on the western coast to its wildlife sanctuaries on the east, this large state offers some mind-blowing experiences. Maharashtra also has some extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, and Elephanta Caves. Ancient forts and places of worship can be found all around the state. Home to four national parks – Tadoba, Dajipur, Radhanagari and Sanjay Gandi – Maharashtra offers numerous outdoor activities such as rock climbing, trekking, paragliding, as well as many watersports.
